The Book of Mormon
Another Testament of Jesus Christ
Paul was trying to understand his friend Chester. Ever since Chester got back from India he was obsessed with religion. Before, he was religion's worst critic, but now he was researching religion constantly. This week Chester was going on and on about Mormonism.
Chester was scribbling some notes down. After realizing his friend was wanting to visit, not watch him work, Chester put away his notebook and tried to be more friendly. "I've been trying to figure out the Book of Mormon. I've been suspicious of its origins. If an angel really delivered the plates of Gold to Joseph Smith, where are the plates? How do we know if it was a holy angel or a fallen angel. The Koran was delivered by an angel and it teaches Christ as being just another prophet and that Christ was not the son of God. The Book of Mormon goes clear the other direction and makes it plain that Christ was God and that Christians are the sons and daughters of God."
Paul tried to act interested but couldn't fake it well enough to fool his friend.
Chester paused. "I'm boring you aren't I?"
Paul spread his hands and apologized. "I'm sorry, I could care less about the Book of Mormon or the Book of Enoch or any of this other stuff your into."
Chester hung his head and raised his hand. "I'm sorry." Trying a different tact, Chester looked up and said. "Tell me about Tina, are you really going to ask her to marry you? How did you get so close to her while I was in India?"
Recommended Book
In 1830, Joseph Smith, founder of the Christian sect known as Mormons, published writings he had translated from golden plates reputedly delivered to him by the angel Moroni. These writings were to become the controversial sacred writings of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) and were titled the "Book of Mormon." Although more than 100 million copies of the Book of Mormon are in print in 94 languages, it has been roundly ignored as a legitimate topic of academic study. To correct the situation, Givens (English, Univ. of Richmond; The Viper on the Hearth) has written a thickly detailed book covering the theology and history of the Book of Mormon and its influences on American culture. The result is not a casual read, and the depth of detail makes the reading difficult for those not familiar with basic theological concepts. Yet for scholars of American religious movements and those with more than a passing interest in the LDS Church, this book is a worthy place to begin one's research and study.
