Soul Awareness in the Bible

All that are in [Hades] shall hear His voice, and shall come forth" (John 5:28,29).

You would have to be aware to hear, would you not?

More on the Soul and Hell:

In some Christian Sects it is taught that the spirit in man is simply his breath and that a living soul is simply a body that is alive (with breath) and it doesn't mean man has a soul that is aware after death. I quote one here:

[begin quote]
When the breath of life is taken from man he dies ... and the breath of life returns to Him who gave it (Eccl. 12:7). Being from God, this breath or spirit is indestructible, but THE SPIRIT IS NOT THE SOUL. It is NOT a conscious you. YOU die, YOU remain dead, until the power of Jesus Christ comes to resurrect you. This doctrine can be easily summarized as follows: Awareness=Life and Death=Non-Awareness
[end quote]

Here are a few Bible verses that are not consistent with this doctrine.

Psalm 89:48 says that man shall die and his "soul" goes to [Sheol]. (The abode of the Dead)

Job 34
13 Who put [God] in charge over the earth? Or who laid on Him the whole world? 14 If [God] should set His heart upon him [man] and withdraw His [life-giving] spirit ("ruwach") and His breath ("nashamah") [from man] to Himself, 15 All flesh would perish together, and man would turn again to dust. Amplified Bible.

Here it is recorded in Job that God can pull from man his spirit and his breath. They aren't the same thing.

Psalm 31
5 Into your hands I commit my spirit; ("ruwach") redeem me, O LORD , the God of truth.

(He doesn't commit his breath)

Psalm 104
29 When you hide your face, they are terrified; when you take away their breath, they die and return to the dust. 30 When you send your Spirit, ("ruwach") they are created, and you renew the face of the earth.

(it takes a spirit from God in addition to breath to create a living being)

Psalm 146
3 Do not put your trust in princes, in mortal men, who cannot save. 4 When their spirit ("ruwach") departs, they return to the ground; on that very day their plans come to nothing.

(The body goes to the ground but the spirit departs for Sheol)

Proverbs 2
16 It will save you also from the adulteress, from the wayward wife with her seductive words, 17 who has left the partner of her youth and ignored the covenant she made before God. [1] 18 For her house leads down to death and her paths to the spirits ("ruwach") of the dead. 19 None who go to her return or attain the paths of life.

It is plain that there are spirits of the dead, not just breathless corpses.

Isaiah 26
13 O LORD , our God, other lords besides you have ruled over us, but your name alone do we honor. 14 They are now dead, they live no more; those departed spirits ("ruwach") do not rise. You punished them and brought them to ruin; you wiped out all memory of them.

Some Christian Sects teach that Sheol is simply a grave. And that a soul in hell is simply a breathless body in the grave. What about Lucifer (Latin for Morning Star), will he be sent to a grave?

Isaiah 14
9 [Sheol] below is all astir to meet you at your coming; it rouses the spirits ("ruwach") of the departed to greet you- all those who were leaders in the world; it makes them rise from their thrones- all those who were kings over the nations. 10 They will all respond, they will say to you, "You also have become weak, as we are; you have become like us." 11 All your pomp has been brought down to [Sheol], along with the noise of your harps; maggots are spread out beneath you and worms cover you.

12 How you have fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the dawn! You have been cast down to the earth, you who once laid low the nations! 13 You said in your heart, "I will ascend to heaven; I will raise my throne above the stars of God; I will sit enthroned on the mount of assembly, on the utmost heights of the sacred mountain. [3] 14 I will ascend above the tops of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High." 15 But you are brought down to the [Sheol] to the depths of [Sheol].

Here in Isaiah it makes it plain that the departed spirits of the dead are upset that Lucifer will be joining them. Why would non-aware breath be upset over anything?

Isaiah 19
3 The Egyptians will lose heart, and I will bring their plans to nothing; they will consult the idols and the spirits ("ruwach") of the dead, the mediums and the spiritists.

How can the Egyptians consult the spirits of the Dead if they aren't aware after death?

There is another scripture that proves that the spirit in man is not simply his breath. In Ezekiel 1 it is recorded that Ezekiel saw an angel. The word translated in Ezekiel as spirit is the same word translated as spirit in man. The angel is obvious AWARE and alive and it has no physical body.

Ezekiel 1
19 When the living creatures moved, the wheels beside them moved; and when the living creatures rose from the ground, the wheels also rose. 20 Wherever the spirit ("ruwach")would go, they would go, and the wheels would rise along with them, because the spirit ("ruwach") of the living creatures was in the wheels. 21 When the creatures moved, they also moved; when the creatures stood still, they also stood still; and when the creatures rose from the ground, the wheels rose along with them, because the spirit ("ruwach") of the living creatures was in the wheels.

(If the spirit in man is simply the breath and has no awareness. Why isn't a spirit angel -non-aware wind?)

Ezekiel 2
Ezekiel's Call
1 He said to me, "Son of man, stand up on your feet and I will speak to you." 2 As he spoke, the Spirit ("ruwach") came into me and raised me to my feet, and I heard him speaking to me.

The word translated as Spirit (an Angel) is the same word translated as the spirit in man. (there are to many other similiar examples in Ezekiel to quote them here.)

There is an interesting example in Ezekiel that proves the ancient Vedic premis that our soul comes from God.

In Ez. 37 the word translated as grave is not from Sheol but from qeber (sepulchre or burying place.) Another interesting point is that while most of the time the word "ruwach" is translated as breath, "ruwach" which elsewhere in Ezekiel is translated as spirit when refering to an angel is breath in a human. But, there is more, in verse 14 it is translated as spirit.

Ezekiel 37
13 Then you, my people, will know that I am the LORD , when I open your graves and bring you up from them. 14 I will put my Spirit ("ruwach") in you and you will live, and I will settle you in your own land. Then you will know that I the LORD have spoken, and I have done it, declares the LORD.

God will place HIS spirit in them. Our souls come from God.

Zechariah 12:1
This is the word of the LORD concerning Israel. The LORD , who stretches out the heavens, who lays the foundation of the earth, and who forms the spirit ("ruwach") of man within him

In Greek, the word translated as spirit is ("pneuma"). It is equivalent to the word ("ruwach") and is sometimes translated as breath but usually is translated as spirit or Ghost as in Holy Ghost (Holy Spirit).

Matthew 27:50
And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit. ("pneuma").

Matthew 28:19
Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them inthe name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, ("pneuma")

Mark 1:27
The people were all so amazed that they asked each other, "What is this? A new teaching-and with authority! He even gives orders to evil spirits ("pneuma") and they obey him."

Nobody believes that the Holy Spirit or evil spirits should be translated as Holy Breath or evil breaths, so when the New Testament talks about the spirit in man, it is referring to the eternal aware soul that is our true identity.

Luke 8
54 But he took her by the hand and said, "My child, get up!" 55Her spirit ("pneuma")returned, and at once she stood up. Then Jesus told them to give her something to eat. 56Her parents were astonished, but he ordered them not to tell anyone what had happened.

Luke 23:46
Jesus called out with a loud voice, "Father, into your hands I commit my spirit." ("pneuma") When he had said this, he breathed his last.

John 1:32
Then John gave this testimony: "I saw the Spirit ("pneuma") come down from heaven as a dove and remain on him.

John 4:24
God is spirit, ("pneuma") and his worshipers must worship in spirit ("pneuma") and in truth."

Is God non-aware breath? If not, why would some teach that we are?

1 Corinthians 2:11
For who among men knows the thoughts of a man except the man's spirit ("pneuma") within him? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit ("pneuma") of God.

Here is a plain statement from Paul that says our spirit is what gives us awareness.

1 Corinthians 5:5
Hand this man over to Satan, so that the sinful nature may be destroyed and his spirit ("pneuma") saved on the day of the Lord.

Hebrews 12:9
Moreover, we have all had human fathers who disciplined us and we respected them for it. How much more should we submit to the Father of our spirits ("pneuma") and live!

Hebrews 12:23
to the church of the firstborn, whose names are written in heaven. You have come to God, the judge of all men, to the spirits ("pneuma") of righteous men made perfect,

James 2:26
As the body without the spirit ("pneuma") is dead, so faith without deeds is dead.

1 Peter 3
18 For Christ died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive by the Spirit, ("pneuma") 19through whom also he went and preached to the spirits ("pneuma") in prison 20who disobeyed long ago when God waited patiently in the days of Noah while the ark was being built. In it only a few people, eight in all, were saved through water,

(How could Christ, while dead) preach to the evil spirits in prison if a spirit in prison is non-aware breath?)
