About Herbert W. Armstrong

Herbert W. Armstrong Mr. Herbert W. Armstrong (1892-1986) was recognized around the world as a man of character and vision. Herbert Armstrong visited more than 70 countries with a message of the soon coming Kingdom of God. He was honored by many heads of state in the Orient, Africa and the Middle East. He was awarded medals of peace and special commendations for his many charitable and humanitarian activities.

Mr. Armstrong was the author of three books that reintroduced into the planetary consciousness, information lost over 1,600 years ago.

You can divide the work of Mr. Armstrong into three main categories as indicated by his three signature works: Lost 10 Tribes of Israel as explained in the United States and Britain in Prophecy, Mankind's True Destiny as revealed in The Incredible Human Potential, and the coming Kingdom of God, as described in the Mystery of the Ages.

  • Mr. Armstrong's Spiritual Beginnings

Mr. Armstrong was married to Loma Dillon in 1917. He was in advertising until 1926. He wasn't interested in religion, the Bible or anything else not related to his advertising career, until his wife began studying the Bible with a neighbor. One day the neighbor lady started a Bible study by asking Mrs. Armstrong to turn to specific scriptures and read them. She had Mrs. Armstrong do this, for many scriptures, for almost an hour. The neighbor offered no commentary or explanation, she just asked Loma to read aloud a series of Biblical passages. After awhile Mrs. Armstrong was amazed to discover the Bible taught Sabbath keeping on the 7th day of the week. She became convinced the scriptures were telling her that she had been keeping the wrong day as the Sabbath. She became very excited and decided to start keeping the Sabbath on the 7th day of the week as opposed to the first day of the week. This news did not thrill Mr. Armstrong! Out of the blue his marriage seemed in trouble. He decided the best course of action was to study the Bible and prove his wife was wrong.

    Council of Laodicea, 364 A.D.
    Sabbath was changed to Sunday

Mr. Armstrong was an accomplished researcher. Due to a downturn in his business, he had plenty of time to run his business and still do research. To his surprise, he not only discovered the Bible taught a 7th day Sabbath, but he discovered why almost all Christian sects had been keeping Sunday as the Sabbath for over 1,600 years... His research uncovered a very important historical event called the Council of Laodicea, 364 A.D.

Catholic Church Council of Laodicea, 364 A.D. - Canon 29: "Christians shall not Judaize and be idle on Saturday, but shall work on that day; but the Lord's day (Sunday) they shall especially honor, and, as being Christians, shall, if possible, do no work on that day. If, however, they are found Judaizing, they shall be shut out from Christ as anathema."

The Catholic Mirror (a publication by Cardinal Gibbons) Sept. 2, 1893 - "...the Redeemer, during His mortal life, never kept any other day than Saturday."

The Catholic Mirror Sept. 9, 1893 - "Nor can we imagine any one foolhardy enough to question the identity of Saturday with the Sabbath or seventh day, seeing that the people of Israel have been keeping the Saturday from the giving of the Law, A.M., 2514 to A.D. 1893 (to the present day)..."

The Catholic Mirror Sept.9, 1893 - "We deem it necessary to be perfectly clear on this point... The Bible - the Old Testament- confirmed by the living tradition of weekly practice for 3383 years by the chosen people of God, teaches, then, with absolute certainty, that God had, Himself, named the day "to be kept holy to Him"- that the day was Saturday..."

Peter Geiermann, C.S.S.R., The Converts Catechism of Catholic Doctrine Third Edition"1). Question: Which is the Sabbath day? "Answer: Saturday is the Sabbath day. 2). "Question: Why do we observe Sunday instead of Saturday?" Answer. "We observe Sunday instead of Saturday because the Catholic Church in the Council of Laodicea, transferred the solemnity from Saturday to Sunday."

Mr. Arstrong realized that the change of the Sabbath from Saturday to Sunday was not of scriptural origin but as a result of a decision among men during the 4th century A.D. Mr. Armstrong was of the opinion that the Catholic Church did not have the authority to make Sunday Holy. As a result of this understanding, he decided to start keeping the 7th day of the week Holy as commanded by God in the Holy Bible. From that point on he made the commitment to obey God, in all things, to the best of his ability and understanding.

Once Mr. Armstrong discovered his wife was right and he was wrong, his life was never the same. He went on and later founded a church called the Radio Church of God which taught the 7th day Sabbath and the New Testament meaning of the Holy Days of God. Later the name was changed to the Worldwide Church of God. He also founded the Ambassador College which trained ministers for what he called, "The Work!"

For over 50 years he published a magazine called the Plain Truth, which was offered free to the public. Mr. Armstrong died in 1986. Today there are many churches that continue in the spirit and tradition of Mr. Armstrong.
